Notes from Week 1

If the Atomists and Brendan Behan met in a bar in Cardiff, say Clwb Ifor, what would they talk about?

OIL constitutes the sole agency for preserving the spiritual treasures accumulated by the dead, the sole transmitting agency by means of which the dead can speak to the living. And the sole earthly reality which is directly connected with the eternal destiny of Man is the irradiating light of those who have managed to become fully conscious of this destiny, transmitted from generation to generation.

What is a map?

Do you know what freedom is?

What is Wales?

Beth yw angen?

Beth yw gwreiddyn?

What is language for?

Where did you come from?

Is it important to have roots?

'Dwi am greu ffurfiau dawns nad sy'n ffynnu o ffurf ymerodrol na chwaith yn rai sy'n ymateb yn erbyn ffurf ymerodrol.

It is necessary to uproot oneself. To cut down the tree and make of it a cross, and then to carry it every day.

It is necessary not to be “myself”, still less to be ourselves. The city gives us the feeling of being at home. We must take the feeling of being at home into exile. We must be rooted in the absence of a place.

To uproot oneself socially and vegetatively. To exile oneself from every earthly country. To do all that to others, from the outside, it is a substitute for decreation. It results in unreality.

By uprooting oneself one seeks greater reality

- Simone Weil on decreation

What is it all about? Do you get it?

I mean do you understand? An d’tuigan tú? Níl sé an rud is mó tabachtach gur d’tuigan gach duine gach rud atá’imid ag labhairt faoi.

Half the time I don’t know what I’m saying either, it’s important to be comfortable in the “not knowing”.

Translation we have found is not always the answer, neither is obedience to form and context. We are trying to consider the potential or opportunity in creating a space for something else. Language, like dance, is as much about emotion as it is about ‘meaning making’.
